Azur Lane Characters Tier List 2026: Best Ships for PvE, Bosses, Operation Siren, and Endgame
Building an azur lane characters tier list sounds easy until you actually try to rank the roster. Azur Lane has hundreds of ships, a ridiculous number of equipment combinations, retrofits, unique augments, META variants, Priority Research ships, limited Ultra Rares, and enough specialized fleet mechanics that the “best” character can change depending on what you're fighting.
That's why I don't like tier lists that simply throw every ship into SS, S, A, and B without context. Lion might be one of the strongest battleships in the game, but that doesn't automatically make her the best answer to every Chapter 16 problem. Unicorn Retrofit isn't a top boss-damage carrier, yet I would rather have her in many mob fleets because healing lets the entire fleet survive another battle. Eldridge Retrofit can be absurd when survivability is the problem, while Helena's value comes from making everybody else hit harder rather than topping the damage chart herself.
The August 2026 meta is also very different from older Azur Lane lists. The once-popular English Community Tier List is no longer actively maintained, and endgame players have largely shifted toward newer tools such as REGAL, which evaluates ships separately for Hard Arbiter, META Showdown, Challenge Mode, EX stages, and Chapters 14–16.
So this guide is built around actual fleet roles rather than rarity alone. I'll cover the strongest current ships, budget picks, equipment priorities, event characters, construction strategy, and the biggest mistakes I see new Commanders make when reading an azur lane characters tier list.

I. Introduction to Azur Lane Tier Lists
A. What Is an Azur Lane Character Tier List?
An Azur Lane tier list ranks ships according to their combat value.
The basic idea usually looks like this:
SS Tier – Exceptional ships that dominate important content.
S Tier – Extremely strong and easy to recommend.
A Tier – Reliable ships that can clear difficult content with proper investment.
B Tier – Useful but more situational or outclassed.
C–F Tier – Usually older, niche, or heavily power-crept ships.
The catch is that Azur Lane isn't one-dimensional. A ship can be SS for mobbing and mediocre against a META boss.
That's why I use tier labels as investment guidance, not as an absolute law.
B. Why Tier Lists Matter for New and Returning Players
Resources are the real reason tier lists matter.
You only have so many:
-
Wisdom Cubes
-
Coins
-
Gold Bulins
-
Specialized Bulins
-
Retrofit Blueprints
-
Augment Cores
-
Skill Books
-
Gear Plates
-
Cognitive Arrays
Spreading those materials across twenty half-built ships is one of the easiest ways to slow an account down.
A good tier list helps me decide which ships deserve investment first.
C. How Often Tier Lists Are Updated in the 2025–2026 Meta
I would check the meta after every major UR event, Research Series, retrofit wave, or powerful augment release.
July 2026 alone introduced Priority Research Series 9, including DR ships Max Immelmann and Valparaíso. August then brought a new anniversary event, ships such as Bennington and Vicksburg, plus Belfast's permanent Retrofit.
That is enough movement to make a year-old list noticeably outdated.
II. Understanding Ship Classes and Roles
A. Overview of All Ship Types
Common hull types include:
BB – Battleship
Heavy main-fleet gun damage.
BC – Battlecruiser
Similar to BBs but mechanically distinct for certain map requirements.
BBV – Aviation Battleship
Hybrid battleship/aviation designs.
CV – Aircraft Carrier
Large airstrike damage and flexible aircraft loadouts.
CVL – Light Carrier
Often faster, cheaper, or support-oriented.
CA – Heavy Cruiser
Durable vanguard damage dealers.
CB – Large Cruiser
Very durable high-end frontline ships.
CL – Light Cruiser
Flexible AA, support, damage, and utility.
DD – Destroyer
Fast vanguard ships with strong torpedoes, evasion, ASW, or specialized utility.
SS / SSV – Submarines
Off-fleet burst support.
You will also encounter monitors, repair ships, munition ships, sailing frigates, and other unusual hulls.
B. Damage Dealers, Tanks, Supports, and Utility Ships
I usually think about roles instead of hull labels.
Damage: Lion, Bismarck Zwei, Alsace, Admiral Nakhimov.
Tank: Guam, Gouden Leeuw, Ägir, Laffey II.
Support: Helena Retrofit, Plymouth, Implacable.
Healing: Unicorn Retrofit.
Survival utility: Eldridge Retrofit.
A fleet built from six damage dealers can look incredible on paper and then fall apart because nobody survives the stage mechanics.
C. How Ship Class Affects Tier List Placement
Each hull competes mainly against ships doing a similar job.
It makes little sense to compare Unicorn Retrofit directly with Lion. One heals a mob fleet; the other demolishes enemies with battleship salvos.
That's why class-specific rankings are much more useful than one giant universal list.
III. Current Meta Overview – August 2026
A. Top Meta Ships for Endgame Content
My current broad endgame shortlist includes:
Battleships: Lion, Götz von Berlichingen, Bismarck Zwei, Alsace, Musashi.
Carriers: Admiral Nakhimov, Implacable, Amagi, Hakuhou, Yorktown II.
Vanguard: Laffey II, Eldridge Retrofit, Guam, Gouden Leeuw, Plymouth.
Submarines: U-2501 plus strong Wolfpack or standalone submarine setups.
Lion deserves special mention. Current endgame rankings describe her as one of the game's strongest ships, with exceptionally high solo damage and a permanent damage-amplifying burn effect.
B. Recent Balance Changes and New Releases
August has been particularly interesting because Belfast received a permanent retrofit and the Global anniversary event added Bennington, Vicksburg, Collett, Harrison, and John Rodgers.
I would avoid instantly declaring a brand-new ship SS tier, though.
It takes time for players to test:
-
Damage consistency
-
Gear options
-
Fleet synergies
-
Campaign survivability
-
Boss synchronization
-
Hidden practical weaknesses
New does not automatically mean meta.
C. Impact of Collaborations and Limited Ships on Meta
Azur Lane collaborations can absolutely produce strong characters.
The July 2026 NieR: Automata collaboration, for example, brought limited characters including 2B and A2.
The problem is availability.
A collaboration character might not rerun for years—or at all.
That's why I prefer building permanent or reliably rerunning alternatives unless the limited ship provides something genuinely unique.
IV. SS and S Tier: Best Ships in Azur Lane
A. Top Battleships and Battlecruisers
My current high-end BB group is:
SS Tier
Lion
Götz von Berlichingen
S Tier
Bismarck Zwei
Alsace
Musashi
Sovetsky Soyuz
Kearsarge
Vanguard
Lion is the easiest raw-damage recommendation.
Bismarck Zwei is arguably more flexible because her black-hole effect groups and briefly controls enemies while her damage remains excellent across armor types.
Musashi deserves a slightly different explanation. She may not beat every newer rainbow battleship in single-target damage, but she remains exceptional in difficult campaign stages because she can absorb pressure for the main fleet.
B. Best Aircraft Carriers and Light Carriers
My highest-priority carriers are:
Admiral Nakhimov
Implacable
Amagi
Hakuhou
Yorktown II
Shinano
Essex Retrofit
Nakhimov becomes especially scary when paired with Northern Parliament slow support such as Sovetsky Soyuz because her kit can convert that synergy into freezes and additional critical damage.
Implacable remains valuable because reliable enemy immobilization makes torpedo-bomber synchronization much easier.
Don't overlook Unicorn Retrofit, either. She isn't a boss DPS carrier, but she remains one of the most useful mob-fleet healers even deep into campaign progression.
C. Must-Have Destroyers, Cruisers, and Submarines
For frontline durability:
Laffey II
Eldridge Retrofit
Guam
Gouden Leeuw
Ägir
For cruiser damage/support:
Plymouth
Helena Retrofit
San Diego Retrofit
Belfast Retrofit
For submarines:
U-2501
U-81
U-96
U-101
U-556 META
U-2501 is particularly strong because her oxygen/reload profile lets her output unusually high sustained submarine damage.
V. A and B Tier: Strong and Reliable Options
A. Solid Choices for Daily Farming and Events
A-tier ships are often all you need.
Examples I still happily use include:
-
Enterprise
-
August von Parseval
-
Independence Retrofit
-
Nelson Retrofit
-
Portland Retrofit
-
Cheshire
-
Anchorage
-
Mainz
-
Scylla
-
Northampton II
The important question isn't “Is this ship SS?”
It is:
Can she do the job my fleet currently needs?
B. Ships That Excel in Specific Content
Some ships are valuable specifically because they solve one problem.
San Diego Retrofit: tremendous anti-air.
Eldridge Retrofit: vanguard survival.
Helena Retrofit: boss damage amplification.
Implacable: enemy control for carrier synchronization.
Unicorn Retrofit: mob healing.
These ships can outperform supposedly higher-tier generalists when their specialty matches the stage.
C. When to Use A/B Tier Over SS/S Tier
Use the lower-tier ship when:
-
It is already fully developed.
-
It fits your faction synergy.
-
It solves a specific mechanic.
-
You lack UR Bulins.
-
Your higher-tier ship has weak gear.
A level 125, properly geared A-tier ship will absolutely outperform an unfinished UR sitting at level 80 with poor equipment.
VI. C, D, and F Tier: Ships to Avoid or Retrofit
A. Underperforming Ships in the Current Meta
Many launch-era ships have simply been power-crept.
Examples include older common and rare ships whose kits contain little more than simple stat buffs.
That doesn't mean you cannot use them.
Azur Lane's campaign is flexible enough that favorite characters can clear a huge amount of content with level advantage and strong gear.
B. Retrofit and Augment Options to Improve Viability
Never judge an old ship without checking:
Does she have a Retrofit?
Does she have a unique Augment?
Warspite is a good modern example. Her newer augment significantly improves her old performance, while Belfast's August 2026 Retrofit has pushed her back into serious consideration. Current augment guidance rates Belfast much more highly after the retrofit.
C. Niche Uses for Low-Tier Ships
Lower-tier ships still matter for:
-
Fleet Technology
-
Collection
-
Event requirements
-
Faction fleets
-
Low-oil farming
-
Hard Mode hull requirements
-
Waifu fleets
And yes, “I like this character” remains a completely valid reason to use her.
VII. Tier List by Ship Type
A. Best Battleships – BB/BC/BBV
My top group:
SS: Lion, Götz von Berlichingen
S: Bismarck Zwei, Alsace, Musashi, Kearsarge, Sovetsky Soyuz
A: New Jersey, Ulrich von Hutten, Vanguard, Warspite with full modern investment
If you want one flexible BB, I like Bismarck Zwei.
If you want raw output, Lion.
If late campaign survival is the problem, Musashi becomes extremely attractive.
B. Best Carriers – CV/CVL
SS/S: Admiral Nakhimov, Implacable, Amagi, Hakuhou, Yorktown II.
Strong utility: Unicorn Retrofit, Essex Retrofit, Independence Retrofit.
Carriers depend heavily on aircraft gear and timing, so their paper tier means very little if their airstrikes keep missing mobile bosses.
C. Best Cruisers and Destroyers – CA/CL/DD
For tanking:
Laffey II, Eldridge Retrofit, Guam, Gouden Leeuw, Ägir
For damage/support:
Plymouth, Helena Retrofit, San Diego Retrofit
Laffey II is particularly ridiculous in campaign survival. Current endgame evaluations rate her as capable of main-tanking extremely difficult Chapters 15 and 16 setups while maintaining strong AA and ASW utility.
D. Best Submarines and Support Ships
U-2501 is one of my current submarine priorities.
For Iron Blood Wolfpack teams, U-96, U-81, U-101, and similar compatible submarines remain useful.
Submarines are not essential early, though. I would finish two good surface fleets before sinking large resources into perfect submarine gear.
VIII. Best Ships for Different Game Modes
A. Tier List for Campaign and Story Mode
Campaign rewards sustainability.
My favorite picks include:
Mob fleet: Unicorn Retrofit, Musashi, Laffey II, San Diego Retrofit.
Boss fleet: Lion, Bismarck Zwei, Admiral Nakhimov, Plymouth.
Chapters 15 and 16 place much heavier emphasis on AA, ASW, and survivability than early maps.
B. Tier List for Operation Siren and Raids
Operation Siren encourages specialized boss fleets.
I like splitting fleets into:
-
BB boss fleet
-
CV boss fleet
-
Mob/general fleet
-
Flexible fourth fleet
Ships such as Helena, Implacable, Plymouth, Nakhimov, Lion, and Bismarck Zwei become especially useful.
C. Tier List for PvP and Guild Battles
Azur Lane PvP means Exercises.
Guild content is mainly cooperative Guild Operations rather than a true guild-versus-guild ranked mode.
Exercises reward fast opening pressure, preload effects, survival tricks, and specialized compositions, so PvE tier lists don't translate perfectly.
IX. F2P-Friendly and Budget Ship Recommendations
A. Best Free-to-Play Ships for New Players
My favorite budget investments are:
Unicorn → Retrofit immediately
Portland → Retrofit
Nelson → Retrofit
Helena → Retrofit
Enterprise
These ships can carry an account surprisingly far.
B. Easily Obtainable Meta Ships from Construction
Permanent construction and exchange pools eventually give access to many excellent older SSRs.
I wouldn't dump Cubes into the permanent pool, though.
Save Cubes for limited banners and let permanent ships arrive naturally.
C. Low-Rarity Ships That Punch Above Their Weight
Some Elite or Rare ships remain useful because of:
-
Healing
-
Retrofit value
-
Cheap limit breaks
-
Fleet buffs
A budget ship that reaches max limit break quickly can be more useful to a beginner than a UR they cannot finish.
X. Equipment, Skills, and Build Guides for Top Ships
A. Best Gear Loadouts for Meta Ships
Gear depends on enemy armor.
Battleships should change guns for light, medium, or heavy armor targets.
Carriers swap between rockets, dive bombers, and torpedo bombers depending on the boss.
Vanguard ships balance:
-
Damage
-
AA
-
HP
-
Evasion
-
ASW
There is no single “best equipment set” for every stage.
B. Skill Priority and Upgrade Paths
Upgrade the skill that defines the ship first.
For example:
Helena: Radar Scan.
Unicorn: healing/preload-related skills.
Implacable: control and airstrike utility.
Main DPS: barrage and damage skills.
Don't spread Skill Books evenly just because every skill is level one.
C. Retrofit and Augment Module Recommendations
High-priority Retrofits include:
-
Unicorn
-
Helena
-
San Diego
-
Eldridge
-
Belfast
-
Essex
Retrofit costs can be substantial, especially UR conversions.
Only finish expensive retrofits when the ship solves a problem you actually have.
XI. Fleet Composition and Synergy Tips
A. How to Build Balanced Fleets Around Tier List Picks
A standard fleet has:
3 Main Fleet ships
3 Vanguard ships
I normally build around one main objective.
For mobs:
Healer + sustained DPS + survivability
For bosses:
3 damage-focused main ships + tank + amplifier + damage/utility vanguard
B. Ship Synergies and Buff Stacking
Examples include:
Nakhimov + Northern Parliament slow support
Plymouth + BB flagship
Amagi + Sakura carrier/torpedo fleet
Helena + synchronized burst fleet
Plymouth, for example, provides excellent damage while amplifying a battleship flagship's damage against marked enemies.
C. Avoiding Common Team Composition Mistakes
Don't:
-
Run six fragile damage ships.
-
Ignore AA in plane-heavy maps.
-
Ignore ASW in Chapter 14–16 requirements.
-
Put all healers in a boss fleet.
-
Mix completely unsynchronized carrier timers.
-
Use a tank in the middle slot while a fragile ship sits in front.
Positioning still matters.
XII. How to Use Tier Lists for Construction and Gacha
A. Which Ships Are Worth Building or Pulling For
My Cube priority is:
-
Limited UR
-
Powerful limited SSR supporting a missing role
-
Favorite characters
-
Everything else
Research ships do not require normal banner pulls, so factor that into your planning.
B. Understanding Rate-Up Banners and Limited Pools
A rate-up does not mean guaranteed.
Always check:
-
Event duration
-
UR pity
-
Available Cubes
-
Coin reserves
-
Whether the ship will rerun
Don't blow your entire Cube stash on day one unless you have enough to reach pity.
C. When to Skip Banners Based on Tier List
Skip when:
-
Your fleet already has better alternatives.
-
The banner is mostly collection-focused.
-
A major UR event is likely soon.
-
You lack resources to develop another rainbow ship.
Owning five URs at 0 limit break is worse than properly finishing the ones you already have.
XIII. Event and Limited Ship Tier List
A. Best Collaboration and Event-Exclusive Ships
Collaboration ships range from novelty picks to legitimate meta options.
The 2026 NieR collaboration is a perfect reminder that collaborations can add real combat units rather than skins alone.
Older collab units such as Rikka Takarada have also remained surprisingly useful for long periods.
B. Are Limited Ships Worth Investing In?
Yes, if they're strong or fill a unique role.
Rarity of availability is not a combat stat, though.
Don't invest only because something says “limited.”
C. Rerun Expectations and Future Availability
Normal Azur Lane events commonly rerun or eventually enter permanent systems.
Collaborations are less predictable because licensing is involved.
If you genuinely want a collab character, pull during the event rather than assuming a rerun.
XIV. Common Mistakes When Reading Tier Lists
A. Overvaluing SS Tier Without Proper Gear
A rainbow icon doesn't magically compensate for terrible equipment.
Gear can completely change boss performance.
B. Ignoring Ship Roles and Content Requirements
Do not replace Unicorn with another DPS carrier because the DPS carrier ranks higher in a boss chart.
Your mob fleet may actually need healing.
C. Not Accounting for Personal Playstyle and Roster
Tier lists assume access to appropriate teammates and equipment.
Your actual account may not have them.
Build around what you own.
XV. Frequently Asked Questions About Tier Lists
A. Can Low-Tier Ships Clear Endgame Content?
Yes, within reason.
Level advantage, optimized gear, good fleet composition, and manual play can compensate for a lot.
The hardest Chapters 15–16 and top boss content are less forgiving, though.
B. How Often Should You Check for Tier List Updates?
I check after:
-
Major UR banners
-
New Research Series
-
New retrofits
-
Unique augments
-
New campaign chapters
Every few months is enough for normal players.
C. Do Tier Lists Differ for Global vs CN/JP Servers?
Yes.
Content schedules can differ slightly, especially around newly released ships.
A Global player should verify whether the ship or retrofit has actually arrived on Global before following another server's list.
For this guide, I've prioritized Global availability and non-Mainland-China reference material.
XVI. Advanced Tips for Optimizing Your Fleet
A. Stat Priorities and Gear Score Optimization
Don't chase the highest numerical gear score.
Focus on:
-
Correct armor modifiers
-
Reload timing
-
Accuracy
-
AA when needed
-
HP/evasion for tanks
-
AVI/FP/TRP appropriate to role
The right 0 gear can outperform the wrong 3 gear.
B. Cooldown Reduction and Resource Management
Synchronization is one of Azur Lane's biggest endgame concepts.
If Helena's debuff activates around 20 seconds, I want my major battleship salvos or carrier strikes landing inside that damage window.
Likewise, slows and freezes help torpedo bombers actually hit moving bosses.
C. Advanced Skill Rotation and Burst Strategies
High-end boss fleets often revolve around timing.
A simple carrier pattern is:
Immobilize target → apply damage amplification → synchronized airstrikes
A BB setup may instead use:
Debuff → three synchronized salvos → repeat
The ships matter, but timing is what turns six strong characters into a strong fleet.
XVII. Community Resources and Tools
A. Best Wikis, Databases, and Tier List Trackers
The old English Community Tier List was useful for years, but it is now unmaintained.
For 2026 endgame rankings, REGAL – Rankings for End Game Azur Lane has become one of the most useful alternatives because it evaluates ships separately across multiple late-game modes instead of forcing one universal rating.
B. Recommended Discord Servers and Subreddits
The Azur Lane subreddit remains useful for:
-
Returning-player advice
-
Event questions
-
Fleet troubleshooting
-
Gear recommendations
Discord is better when you want fast answers during a new event.
C. Following Trusted Content Creators and Theorycrafters
I prefer creators who show:
-
Equipment
-
Fleet composition
-
Damage testing
-
Boss armor type
-
Reload timing
-
Actual clear footage
A thumbnail saying “BROKEN NEW SHIP” tells me almost nothing.
XVIII. Future of Azur Lane Meta and Tier Lists
A. Upcoming Ships and Expected Balance Changes
Power creep will continue.
That doesn't mean every current meta ship suddenly becomes useless.
Ships with unique utility—healing, freezing, damage amplification, extreme AA, or special survivability—usually age better than ships whose entire identity is “deal slightly more damage.”
B. Potential New Game Modes and Their Impact
New chapters or endgame mechanics can immediately change rankings.
San Diego became incredibly valuable when AA pressure mattered.
Laffey II and Eldridge Retrofit gain value when vanguard survival becomes brutal.
A future mode could easily elevate another specialized ship.
C. Long-Term Viability of Current Meta Picks
The ships I trust most long-term are those offering both stats and utility:
-
Bismarck Zwei
-
Lion
-
Musashi
-
Implacable
-
Admiral Nakhimov
-
Plymouth
-
Laffey II
-
Eldridge Retrofit
-
Unicorn Retrofit
Their kits solve real problems rather than simply having slightly bigger numbers.
XIX. Conclusion: Maximizing Your Azur Lane Progress
The biggest takeaway from this azur lane characters tier list is that there is no single fleet containing the six objectively strongest ships.
Azur Lane doesn't work like that.
For battleships, Lion, Götz von Berlichingen, Bismarck Zwei, Alsace, and Musashi sit among the characters I would invest in most confidently. Lion brings enormous raw damage, Bismarck Zwei combines damage with battlefield control, while Musashi remains one of my favorite answers to dangerous campaign stages.
For carriers, Admiral Nakhimov, Implacable, Amagi, Hakuhou, and Yorktown II are powerful endgame choices. Nakhimov is particularly nasty in properly built Northern Parliament compositions, while Implacable remains valuable because stopping a boss from moving can be just as important as adding another damage buff.
In the vanguard, Laffey II, Eldridge Retrofit, Guam, Gouden Leeuw, Ägir, Plymouth, Helena Retrofit, and San Diego Retrofit all solve different problems. Laffey II survives things most destroyers have no business surviving. Eldridge can keep an entire frontline alive through dangerous windows. Plymouth turns an already strong battleship flagship into an even stronger one.
For new players, though, I would not chase a full UR fleet immediately. Start with efficient ships. Unicorn Retrofit, Portland Retrofit, Helena Retrofit, Nelson Retrofit, and Enterprise can build a foundation that clears enough content to fund your later meta fleets.
Most importantly, remember that tier lists describe potential, not automatic performance. A top-tier ship still needs limit breaks, levels, skills, equipment, and compatible teammates. A fully developed A-tier ship will usually be more useful today than an SS-tier UR you're unable to finish for three months.
Use tier rankings to decide where your scarce resources should go, but don't let them dictate every character you use. Azur Lane is generous enough that a well-built favorite can clear most of the game, and that's part of what keeps the roster interesting.
Build the ships that solve your current problems, save Cubes for banners that genuinely improve your account, keep your equipment updated, and revisit the meta whenever major URs, retrofits, Research Series, or new endgame chapters arrive.
