Rare Gems

In addition to buying boosts, occasionally you will be offered a special deal to buy a rare gem. Rare gems are indeed rare, as you will be offered to buy one only every 40 games or so, just before you buy boosts. They are very expensive, coins-wise, and they are only good for one game. Sometimes Popcap will have a special time when you will be offered a rare gem more often, sometimes after every game!

There are currently four rare gems:

What a find! These glowing lunar fragments fall to earth only once in a century. Harvest one to unleash three potent Star Gems in your very next game.
Cat's Eye

25,000
Found deep below the Earth, these amber stones cage a wild feline energy aching to be free! The power will be unleashed at the end of your next game.
Blazing Steed

55,000
This igneous horse spirit erupts from Fire Obsidian and ignites an instant Blazing Speed. Trample the board with superheated Flame Gems and an explosive stampede!
Phoenix Prism

75,000
Summon six Prisms in your next game! These wildcard Gems will match any color to trigger a diagonal blast! Find rare Phoenix feathers for a God Coin jackpot!

The Phoenix Prism has two end-of-game features in addition to the 6 diagonal blasts: (1) you get 5,000 coins for every multiplier level you achieve during the game; (2) some feathers float down from the top of the screen, the phoenix grabs one at random and gives you bonus coins (not points!) between 1,000 and 100,000. So if the phoenix grabs the 100,000 feather, you actually end up with more coins than you started with at the end of the game!

Rare Gem Streaks

In the middle of 2011, the concept of "Rare Gem Streaks" was introduced. The idea is that if you purchase a rare gem, after your game is over you can purchase that same rare gem again for your next game, and at a slight discount. You can play three games in a row with the same rare gem if you want to and you have enough coins! Here are the coin prices for each rare gem:

Best Rare Gems

Here's the top three countdown to the best rare gem helping you a chance to get a top high score:

  • #4: Coming in fourth place is the Moonstone rare gem. Though this rare gem is under-rated, it's simply not as potentially powerful as other rare gems. However, it does start you off with three special gems on the board (flames, stars, or hypercubes), and you can use this rare gem in conjunction with boosts like the detonator to create a lot of mayhem on the board early in the game. If mayhem is what you like, try this rare gem! And sometimes PopCap will hold a "Moonstone Monday" where you can buy Moonstone rare gems frequently during your session.

  • #3: The Cat's Eye rare gem is pretty cool, but for the best results you need to combine it with a great game. The Cat's Eye doesn't actually do anything until the end of your game, then it drops down and delivers 14 eye-laser hits to the board. The power these last laser hits produce depends directly on your multiplier level because the Cat's Eye will further multiply it by three. So if you've managed to get 8x in the game, the Cat's Eye will be 24x!

  • #2: The Blazing Steed is a truly awesome and powerful rare gem. If you like getting "blazing speed", this is the gem for you. It starts your game out in blazing speed mode, and of course you could also get a second blazing speed in the same game. Then, at the end of your game, several steeds will gallop across the bottom half of the playing field dropping bombs along the way for a final surge of points!

  • #1: At a whopping cost of 75,000 coins, the Phoenix Prism rare gem is by far the most effective tool in the rare gem toolbox to give you an awesome score. All of my top 10 high scores of all time have come using a Phoenix Prism. It acts a lot like a Star special gem in that it creates a lot of mayhem on the board, except that an activated phoenix clears out gems diagonally, and you are guaranteed to have 6 of Phoenix's special gems created throughout the game. If you don't use all of them during the game, they will be created and activated at the end, when points potential is at a premium. Also, if you find yourself with a Phoenix gem on the board next to a hypercube, try dragging one to the other and something special may happen!

Plus, your score will also be increased after the game is over by 5,000 points for every multiplier level, so you can get up to 40,000 bonus points.

Oh yeah; one more thing. At the very end of the game after the last hurrah, a Phoenix feather will drop from the top of the board and will give you bonus *coins* up to as many as 100,000 coins!

A new possible rare gem!

Rare gems show their magical powers at different stages during a game. Some powers appear at the start of your game, some occur while you are playing, and some happen at the end after play is over. Here's a table showing when each rare gem wields its power:

When rare gems wield their power
Rare Gem
Start
During
End
Moonstone
X
Cat's Eye
X
Blazing Steed
X
X
Phoenix Prism
X
X

Note that the Moonstone is only magical at the beginning of the game, and the Cat's Eye is magical only at the end of a game. Therefore I suggest the developers consider creating a new rare gem, perhaps called a "MoonCat" picture of a moon cat or something similar, that combines the early power of the moon with the ending power of the laser cat! This could fill the hole between the less-powerful gems and the more-powerful ones. Sell it for 40,000 coins, and combine the powers of the two lesser gems.

Summary:

You should try out each rare gem when you are offered them if you can afford the coins. Then you can decide for yourself which one fits your style of play the best. To maximize your score, combine these rare gems with your three favorite boosts.

A possible new name for rare gems

When "rare" gems were first introduced with the advent of the Moonstone rare gem, they were truly "rare" in the sense that you might have to play a big bunch of games between getting offered a rare gem at the beginning.

However, now we have several rare gems, and a few times a month, we might see offers for buying a rare gem at the beginning of every game we play! So I think we need to reconsider the actual name "rare" gem, which isn't really so true these days.

Instead, I suggest PopCap change the name of rare gems to "Super Gems". I think that name more accurately represents what these powerful gems do, without the restrictions of the word "rare".
