Wow! Another new temporary rare gem called "Rock-It Blast" appeared today. It's awesome: on my first try, I managed to get me highest score ever (even more than with a Kanga 3) at about 1,172,000! Give it a try! This new rare gem will undoubtedly create a whole new landscape for your Leader Boards!

Keystone reward increases: WOW! Have you noticed the past several days that the reward payouts for keystones have increased significantly? For example, whereas simple keystone rewards might pay out 1,000 to 1,800 coins, now they pay out as much as 2,800! And previous hard keystones that would pay out between 9,000 to 11,000 are now paying out up to 20,000 coins!

I don't know if this is a temporary change or permanent, but if you're a keystone afficionado, this is your time to play and play hard!

Flower Power! Popcap announced today the addition of a new rare gem: "Flower Power". My first early thoughts about this new rare gem are that it's awesome! Whereas KangaRuby concentrates on red gems, Flower Power concentrates on purple gems. But there are two new and significant things about Flower Power: first, it creates LOTS of MAYHEM on the board as many purple gems are flower-shaped and each match detroys part or all of the column the flower gem is in. This feature allows the player to match multiplier gems fairly quickly throughout the game--you might even get upto 8x! Second, because each purple flower gem is considered a special gem, the last hurrah at the end of the game will usually give up lots more mayhem and points. Finally, you get a 1-in-9 chance of picking up to 100,000 coins when the game is over.

Flower Power will have a 30% discount Thursday morning through Friday morning the 9th and 10th of May, so be sure to take advantage of this and practice using this new and powerful rare gem!

Have you tried the recently-added KangaRuby rare gem yet? I have used it several times and honestly haven't been too impressed yet. But today (February 5, 2013) PopCap announced some enhancements to this rare gem. They have added two levels of power to Bruce, so now there is a level 1 KangaRuby as usual, but there are also levels 2 and 3 which increase its power. You get offered the more powerful KangaRubys when you share using it with your friends.

According to PopCap's BB FAQ:

Kanga Ruby Levels 2 and 3 will give you some of the best scoring opportunities in the game, higher than even the Phoenix Prism!

Needless to say, an enhancement to a rare gem that can make it even more powerful than a Phoenix Prism is awesome, so I hope like me you'll be giving the new levels a try!

Wow! Popcap has really gone the extra mile in the last several months on facebook, adding new features and updating old ones. Here's a list of updates:

  • Happy Hour hours are now longer. Officially, PopCap advertises the new hours as 6 hours, from 2 PM to 8 PM on Fridays, but it often starts even earlier.
  • There's a new rare gem in town called Blazing Steed!
  • There is a new method for earning additional coins, experience points and other special prizes. These are called "Keystones" (kind of like "milestones") and when you earn one, you'll get a Keystone reward.

I'm very pleased to see all these new extras to the Bejeweled Blitz program as it demonstrates a commitment by the creators to continue advancing and improving the game. Keep it up PopCap!

Why PopCap and Facebook do not Allow Player-to-Player Coin Transfers

[This is really just conjecture on my part, but I believe it is correct]

Facebook/PopCap do allow you to give a gift of coins to another player by purchasing them with Facebook credits, but why don't they allow you to do player-to-player coin transfers directly? I would love to be able to occasionally donate bunches of coins from my own abundant coin stack to my fellow players who might need some more coins.

The question is why isn't this allowed? I believe there are two reasons:

First, it is conceivable that someone who is a BB player but also a hacker-type could develop some nefarious scheme to obtain lots and lots of coins by cheating in some way, either by figuring out a way to code for more coins or perhaps developing an auto-player or something similar.

Second, even if a player gets lots of coins through normal play, they might be tempted to sell their coins to other players by charging the buying player a real-money PayPal transaction. That's a real-world possible scenario and might work out, except that in the case of a dispute (like: "you didn't transfer the amount of coins to me that you promised"), Facebook would have to intervene to settle the dispute with no benefit to them.

Both of these possibilities would lead to lower potential revenues for Facebook and Popcap through Facebook credits, and would additionally have the potential to require additional resources (the time and effort involved in settling disputes).

At any rate, I'd still enjoy being able to transfer coins directly from player to player, but it simply doesn't seem feasible at this point.

Struggling to Maintain Your Coin Stack

The introduction of the 75,000-coin Phoenix Prism, combined with the new "rare gem streak" that allows you to purchase the same gem for three games in a row (at a reduced price for games two and three) has definitely changed the way I play Bejeweled Blitz:

It used to be the case that most of the time I would just play in "free play" or "practice" mode (where I never buy boosts or rare gems). But during happy hour on Fridays I would splurge and buy my favorite two boosts with the free x2 multiplier boost, occasionally also buying the Cat's Eye rare gem when it was offered.

But since the new Phoenix Prism rare gem came along, it is simply very, very tempting to buy it often because it can produce VERY high scores. So therefore I find my stack of coins constantly on the downward trend. If you find yourself in the same situation, you could consider buying some facebook credits to get more coins. An Abundance of Coin-Spending Opportunities

It has been one heck of a past month of play for Bejeweled Blitz players! We've seen:

  • The announcement of the "Phoenix Prism" rare gem
  • The introduction of the "rare gem streak" which allows you to purchase a rare gem for up to three games in a row (at a discount)
  • Various fan "appreciation" days such as all-day happy hours and "Caturdays" (which offer you a CatsEye rare gem about every 5 games or so instead of every 40 games or so)
  • An increase in the price of the rare "Moonstone" gem from 10,000 back to its original 25,000 coins

If you view the list above as a whole, all of these things look like cool situations for the player, and there definitely are some neato things there. The Phoenix Prism has allowed me to get my all-time high score (by a lot)! And using rare gems more frequently gives you more experience with them. But, for example, the Phoenix Prism costs 75,000 coins, and if you combine it with the rare gem streak, and you also buy the "three boostketeers" boosts for those three games, you're spending: 75,000 + 60,000 + 50,000 + 14,500, which is 199,500 coins for just those three games. It takes about 10 hours or more of play to accumulate that many coins in free play mode!

Therefore, all of the items listed above also have one other thing in common: they all cause the player to be tempted to spend more and more coins, and possibly have to buy more coins with facebook credits, which cost real $$. My suspicion here is that BB/PopCap have decided to do exactly this: to try to increase revenue by causing players to diminish their coin stack faster and thus buy more coins and facebook credits.

There's nothing wrong with this! No businesses can survive without a revenue stream, and we want PopCap to be successful and to continue supporting BB in free-play mode too. So if you can afford it, do buy facebook credits to add coins and buy boosts and rare gems to compete with your friends. I think that's absolutely fine, and I've done my fair share of buying coins for fb credits too.

Plus, PopCap has been historically very generous in giving free coins, through daily spins, combined score bonuses, weekly drawings, happy hour discounts and so forth.

But it's also important just to be *aware* that special announcements about fan appreciation might also be a way to get players to spend more coins. So carefully consider how you split your time between free-play and pay-play.
